Between politics and principles; Hamas? perilous maneuvers
Ramzy Baroud, Ma?an News Agency?3/1/2012
Despite all of Hamas` assurances to the contrary, a defining struggle is taking place within the Palestinian Islamic movement.
The outcome of this struggle ? which is still confined to polite political disagreements and occasional intellectual tussle ? is likely to change Hamas? outlook, if not fundamentally alter its position within a quickly changing Arab political landscape.
The current Hamas is already different from the one initially set up by a local Gaza leadership in December 1987 in response to the first Palestinian uprising. One of the very first statements circulated by their newly established ?military wing? (masked men armed with wooden clubs and cans of spray paint) expressed the nature of that political era:
?What has happened to you, O rulers of Egypt? Were you asleep in the period of the treaty of shame and surrender, the Camp David treaty? Has your national zealousness died and your pride ran out while the Zionists daily perpetrate grave and base crimes against the people and the children??
Although the power discrepancy between Israel and the Palestinians has remained largely unchanged, Hamas has morphed from a local Palestinian branch of Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood into a tour de force within Palestinian society.
It has also become an important regional player, long designated by the US and Israel as a member of the radical camp in the Middle East (the other members being Iran, Syria and Hezbollah). While Iran and Syria were demonized for aiding and enabling Palestinian and Lebanese resistance to Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah successfully resisted Israel?s military adventures in Gaza and Lebanon.?more.. e-mail
Israeli Military Courts as Enforcement Mechanism of Occupation
Charlotte Kates, Palestine Chronicle?2/23/2012
?As for your judicial apparatus?: it is one of the instruments of the occupation whose function is to give the cover of legal legitimacy to the crimes of the occupation, in addition to consecrating its systems and allowing the imposition of these systems on our people through force. This judicial apparatus also supports the administration of this occupation ? which is the worst form of state-organized terrorism ? as if you were in a permanent state of self-defense. The legitimate resistance of our people is seen as if it were terrorism that must be combated and liquidated and judgment is placed upon those that practice or support it. And in the face of this contradiction between two logics, there would have to be a conviction.? ? Ahmad Sa?adat, Palestinian leader and political prisoner, addressing Israeli military court.
Khader Adnan?s 66 days of hunger strike under administrative detention, without charge or trial, sparked global discussion, outrage, and movement ? perhaps the largest ever seen in the long history of the Palestinian prisoners? struggle ? as Adnan?s courage, steadfastness and strength inspired solidarity the world over. During that time, it was on many occasions expressed that Khader Adnan should be charged, or released. Administrative detention is a particularly appalling mechanism of political detention ? based on secret evidence, with no cognizable charges and no opportunity to confront said ?evidence? ? used arbitrarily by Israel to hold Palestinian organizers for six-month renewable periods.
The abolition of administrative detention (a call which has been taken up by Amnesty International) is a long-term demand of the Palestinian prisoners? movement ? and Israel?s use of this system violates international law. However, it must be noted that ?being charged? in the Israeli military courts, the justice system that governs Palestinians in the occupied West Bank of Palestine, is in no way a solution for Palestinian political prisoners?.?more.. e-mail
Ahlan wa sahlan in Al-Quds
Daoud Kuttab, Ma?an News Agency?3/1/2012
The invitation by the Palestinian president to Arabs and Muslims to visit Jerusalem is long overdue. But it is better late than never.
Jerusalem?s 300,000 Palestinians badly needed this visit, which comes at a time when their natural hinterland (the rest of the West Bank) has been cut off from them.
For years Arabs and Muslims have shied away from visiting Jerusalem and other Palestinian lands for a variety of reasons. Most have no opportunity to go even if they want to. With the exception of Egypt and Jordan (the latter only since 1994) no other Arab country has diplomatic relations with Israel.
Non-Arab states with substantial Muslim populations can visit, and some have in the past decades, mostly through one-off tourism junkets. I saw Muslims, from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, South Africa and Bangladesh, among others, crossing into Palestine over the King Hussein Bridge. Some said that it was emotionally difficult for them to see the holy city under a foreign military rule.
Religious leaders, and for different reasons, have also trickled in. Egyptian Copts were ordered not to visit Jerusalem because of Israel?s unilateral decision (before the peace with Egypt) to give the keys of a Jerusalem convent near the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to rival Eritreans (at the time Israeli allies). Egyptian-born Doha-based Islamic leader Yosef Qardawi also issued a fatwa against visits to Jerusalem; it was not challenged until recently.
Some people, with loud rhetoric, have publicly called for a boycott, claiming that such a visit only encourages Israelis to continue their occupation, as it shows that the occupation and annexation of Jerusalem is normal?.?more.. e-mail

Homes Destroyed, Lives Shattered: Criminal Demolitions in the OPT?s
Palestine Chronicle: 1 Mar 2012 ? By Graham Peebles Within the catalogue of criminality that is Israel?s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the destruction of Palestinian homes must rank as one of the most cynical and heinous. ?Some 90,000 people are currently reported to be at risk of displacement as a result of Israeli policies such as restrictive and discriminatory planning, the revocation of residency rights, the expansion of settlements and the construction of the West Bank Separation Wall.? (Internal-displacement.org) Let us note and explore further, with the tacit engagement of America, who bank-roles the entire operation. Home, a refuge from the world, safe and secure, somewhere to relax with family and friends, and breath easy, free from fear. This simple image of normality is unknown to many Palestinians living under the brutal illegal occupation by Israel. ?The Israeli practice of demolishing homes, basic infrastructure and sources of livelihoods continues to devastate Palestinian families?more

The Ghost and the Machine
Palestine Chronicle: 29 Feb 2012 ? By Kathy Kelly ? with research by the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers Fazillah, age 25, lives in Maidan Shar, the central city of Afghanistan?s Wardak province. She married about six years ago, and gave birth to a son, Aymal, who just turned five without a father. Fazillah tells her son, Aymal, that his father was killed by an American bomber plane, remote-controlled by computer. That July, in 2007, Aymal?s father was sitting in a garden with four other men. A weaponized drone, what we used to call an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or UAV, was flying, unseen, overhead, and fired missiles into the garden, killing all five men. Now Fazillah and Aymal share a small dwelling with the deceased man?s mother. What Surprises Await Our Warmongers in the Gulf?
Palestine Chronicle: 29 Feb 2012 ? By Stuart Littlewood The most important thing I?ve read these last few days is the excellent article ?Armageddon Approaches? by Dr Lasha Darkmoon, a cautionary piece which points the reader towards some very scary background information. For example, according to Russ Winter of The Wall Street Examiner, Iran?s Sunburn missiles, acquired from Russia and China over the last 10 years, have the capability of creating ?a world of hurt? for the US Navy?s 5th Fleet. ?The Sunburn is perhaps the most lethal anti-ship missile in the world, designed to fly as low as 9 feet above ground/water at more than 1,500 miles per hour (mach 2+). The missile uses a violent pop-up maneuver for its terminal approach to throw off Phalanx and other US anti-missile defense systems. Given their low cost, they?re perfectly suited for close quarter naval conflict in the bathtub-like Persian Gulf.? With its 90-mile range, the Sunburn?more
How the Media Got the Parchin Access Story Wrong
Dissident Voice: 1 Mar 2012 ? News media reported last week that Iran had flatly refused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to its Parchin military test facility, based on a statement to reporters by IAEA Deputy Director General, Herman Nackaerts, that ?We could not get access?. Now, however, explicit statements on the issue by the Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA and the language of the new IAEA report indicate that Iran did not reject an IAEA visit to the base, per se , but was only refusing access as long as no agreement had been reached with the IAEA governing the modalities of cooperation. That new and clarifying information confirms what I reported February 23. Based on the history of Iranian negotiations with the IAEA and its agreement to allow two separate IAEA visits to Parchin in 2005, the Parchin access issue is a bargaining chip that Iran is using to get the IAEA to?more
