For thousands of world-class athletes, a passport is something they can't forget to pack before heading off to London for the summer Olympic games. But for a few athletes, a different kind of passport is keeping them out of competition entirely.

A new anti-doping program known as the athlete biological passport (ABP), which looks for indirect evidence that an athlete has cheated, is being implemented by several international sports authorities. Already the testing scheme, developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), has ensnared world-class athletes?and survived a challenge to its validity.

The London Olympics mark the first summer games in which the ABP will be in use alongside traditional drug screenings. And for competitors in sports that have taken up the program, such as cycling and track and field, dreams of Olympic glory will depend on their test results?past and present.

Rather than screening an athlete's blood or urine samples for traces of banned substances right before or after a competition, testers using the ABP scheme compare samples with an athlete's baseline profile, as determined by multiple tests over time. In the absence of a legitimate physiological explanation, such as an illness or a natural response to changing altitude, variations in an athlete's biological samples can reveal wrongdoing even if the specific doping agent or process remains undetected. For instance, a sudden change in the number of reticulocytes, or immature blood cells, might provide indirect evidence that an athlete has used erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that stimulates the generation of red blood cells and boosts the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Similar tests can assess levels of the respiratory pigment hemoglobin, which can also reveal instances of blood manipulation to enhance oxygen transport.

"In this way, the athlete becomes his own reference point," says WADA medical director Alan Vernec. "Otherwise you're forever chasing after new types of substances or agents that are being developed."

So far the biological passport has been applied primarily to detect instances of blood doping, but the same strategy could be used on urine samples to identify users of anabolic steroids. Nevertheless, the ABP is unlikely to supplant conventional testing schemes that detect prohibited molecules, such as steroids or human growth hormone, in blood and urine. Anti-doping experts view the passport approach as a complement to such tests, which continue to catch athletes breaking the rules.

Indeed, conventional testing still plays a significant role in cycling, the first major sport to sign on to WADA's passport approach. In the highest-profile recent case, Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador was issued a two-year suspension and stripped of his 2010 Tour de France win after a sample that year tested positive for clenbuterol, which WADA classifies as an anabolic agent.

The International Cycling Union (UCI), suffering from a severe credibility problem, adopted the ABP in 2008, collecting about 10 blood samples each from more than 800 riders over the course of the year. But implementation of the ABP has not been without twists and turns. Cyclist Franco Pellizotti, who raced for Italy in the 2008 Olympics, was suspended in 2010 for irregularities in his blood profile that indicated "enhancement of oxygen transfer." But the rider was soon exonerated by the Italian Olympic committee, which held that the evidence against Pellizotti was insufficient to prove his guilt.

The cycling union appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland, which last year overturned the Italian committee's decision and reinstated Pellizotti's two-year ban from cycling. The court also upheld a two-year ban for Italian rider Pietro Caucchioli; the cyclist's variations in hemoglobin concentration over a span of several months, the court ruled, "could not be considered as physiological" and hence demonstrated doping to enhance the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity.

Power provider loses appeal of EPA oversight

DALLAS (AP) ? The largest power generator in Texas lost an appellate court challenge Monday over federal supervision of state clean-air regulations.

Dallas-based Luminant Generation Co. filed a lawsuit challenging how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency responded to state plans for implementing new clean-air standards. But in a 29-page ruling, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled that the EPA acted within its powers in partially rejecting the state plan.

The so-called "state implementation plan" is a state's plan for implementing requirements of the U.S. Clean Air Act.

Luminant and other electric power generators have been involved in an ongoing fight over efforts to implement more stringent clean-air standards that could mean trouble for some of the generators' coal-fired power plants. The EPA has been pressing states, including Texas, to implement more stringent air pollution standards that reflect federal standards.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality put forth plans that would give air polluters latitude for excessive emissions resulting from unplanned, unavoidable malfunctions. But the EPA said the state would need to require polluters to prove that they had done all they could to prevent the polluting incidents.

Luminant can ask for a rehearing by the full 5th Circuit Court, but "we are still reviewing the court's opinion and assessing our options," spokeswoman Ashley Barrie said.

Meanwhile, environmentalists hailed the ruling as a victory that would require tougher clean-air efforts and allow enforcement suits to proceed, said Bruce Nilles, senior director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign.

Texas has 19 coal-fired power plants ? more than any other state ? and plans to build nine more. It is one of the few states still adding coal-fired plants and releases more air pollutants than any other state. Most other states are building generation plants that use sources other than coal, particularly natural gas.

Faced with a growing population, few new energy sources and hot summers, Texas has been vocal in its opposition to the regulations since the new rules were announced in July. The state has asked a federal appeals court to review the rules.

John W. Whitehead: Violence Begets Violence: Making Sense of the Dark Knight Massacre

"In a world gushing blood day and night, you never stop mopping up pain." -- Aberjhani, The River of Winged Dreams
"Violence is as American as cherry pie" -- H.R. Schiffman

The fact that 24-year-old neuroscience student James Holmes had the wherewithal to turn himself into a lethal killing machine is tragic but far from surprising. Frankly, I'm almost surprised it doesn't happen more often, given that we're not only raising young people on a diet of violence but indoctrinating them into a worldview that sees violence as a means to an end, whether it's a SWAT team crashing through a door or the Avengers taking on invading alien armies. By the time a child reaches 18, it is estimated that he or she will have witnessed 200,000 acts of violence, including 40,000 murders on television.

Violence begets violence. Not only is violence contagious, however, but it's imploding on America, a nation plagued by violence -- in our homes, in our schools, on our streets and in our affairs of state, both foreign and domestic. Violence permeates our entertainment culture with its glamorization of death and destruction in reality TV shows such as Cops and Dog the Bounty Hunter, movies such as The Dark Knight Rises and the upcoming Gangster Squad (in which a gangster opens fire in a movie theater), and video games such as Soldier of Fortune.

Violence has become our government's calling card, starting at the top and trickling down, from President Obama's "kill list" to the more than 80,000 SWAT team raids carried out every year on unsuspecting Americans by heavily armed, black-garbed commandos. Our nation has one of the highest murder rates and levels of incarceration of all industrialized nations in the world. We even export violence, with one of this country's most profitable exports being weapons. All too often, these same weapons fall into the hands of our enemies.

America is now seen as a violent empire with continual wars that stretch back to at least the beginning of the twentieth century. We send our young men and women off to fight these questionable wars in far-flung places, only to have them return broken, shell-shocked and battling bouts of violence, depression and suicide.

This brings us to the events of July 20, 2012, when a 24-year-old gunman, dressed as the Joker and wearing a gas mask and black SWAT gear, walked into a crowded Denver movie theater, set off two gas canisters and opened fire on the crowd assembled for the midnight showing of The Dark Night Rises, leaving 12 dead and over 60 injured.

The media, true to form, is subjecting us to every grisly detail of the shootings. You can't turn on the television without seeing this tragedy used as grist for prime-time ratings. In its feeding frenzy, the media has succeeded in glamorizing death and destruction to such an extent that shooting sprees have gained a notorious appeal -- a way for people who, in life, may never have rated a second glance to attain celebrity status in death.

Yet even with the 24-hour coverage, we have more questions than answers, and speculation is rife. And the biggest question of all looms large: Who or what is to blame?

Politicians want to blame the tragedy on easy access to guns. Their solution? Gun control and zero-tolerance policies. But these are just cosmetic Band-aids, doomed to failure, because if someone really wants to wreak havoc, they'll find a way to obtain a weapon.

Sociologists want to blame it on the steady diet of violence that permeates everything in our culture. We have been caught in the grip of a cycle of violence that started with the government's televised attack on a Waco compound in April 1993, in which 79 adults and children were killed. Two years later, to the day, the Oklahoma City bombing left 168 people dead. Four years after that, on April 20, 1999, two teenagers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, opened fire on classmates and teachers at Columbine High School, killing 12 students and one teacher and leaving 24 others wounded.

Then, on April 16, 2007, we had the Virginia Tech massacre, in which 23-year-old Seung-Hui Cho walked into a university building on the Virginia Tech campus, chained the doors shut and opened fire on students and teachers alike, leaving 32 dead and many more injured before turning the gun on himself. Most recently, in February 2012, teenager T. J. Lane -- reportedly a victim of bullying and something of a social outcast -- walked into a Cleveland high school and opened fire in the cafeteria, killing two students and wounding three others.

The instinctive response to this latest Denver shooting spree will be to appease the public by adopting measures that provide the appearance of increased security. However, enacting tighter gun policies and increasing police surveillance and patrols will accomplish little more than propelling us the final step of the way into a police state.

It may be that Denver gunman James Holmes was simply a deeply disturbed individual, but we cannot ignore the fact that he was also a product of American culture. Thus, the question is not so much "Why is there a Holmes?" but "Why aren't there more Holmeses, Chos, McVeighs and Klebolds?"

To borrow from Shakespeare, the fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves. We are a society that is armed to the teeth. Our culture glorifies violence. Even security guards at shopping malls carry weapons. Our government is especially guilty of using violence as a quick fix. How can we teach nonviolence if our government leaders subscribe to violence?

In one of his classic essays, C.S. Lewis aptly described the absurdity of the mixed messages being sent to our young people. More than 60 years later, his words continue to resonate:

All the time -- such is the tragi-comedy of our situation -- we continue to clamour for those very qualities we are rendering impossible. You can hardly open a periodical without coming across the statement that what our civilization needs is more "drive", or dynamism, or self-sacrifice, or "creativity". In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.

Skiing To Mars: The Original Rovers

Prime real estate. The landing zone for Curiosity (NASA/JPL)

As the world waits with bated breath for NASA?s Curiosity rover to attempt a safe landing on Mars on August 6th (EDT), it?s interesting to recall the rovers of times past. We?ve all heard about Spirit (R.I.P. 2010) and Opportunity (still kicking), and their immediate technological precursor Sojourner (part of the Mars Pathfinder mission), but long before these plucky robots turned their wheels in the martian regolith there was an earlier generation of explorers trying to make their mark.

In 1971 the Soviet Union launched two nearly identical spacecraft towards the red planet; Mars 2 and Mars 3. Each consisted of an orbiter and a lander, with the latter carrying remarkable little machines ? the first Mars rovers.

Mars 2/3 lander, petals out

The plan was for the descent modules to enter the martian atmosphere, use their engines and attitude jets to control and slow their motion, and to deploy parachutes before making a fairly hard impact ? instruments cushioned only by foam in the nearly spherical landing capsules. Each of these capsules was about four feet across, and together with their aero-braking heat shields and fueled retro rockets they amounted to about 2,500 lbs Earth-weight. On landing the capsules would open 4 ?petals? to help right themselves (an approach duplicated by later rover missions) and orientate their instruments.

A Prop-M rover

The special passenger in each was a tiny 10 lb Earth-weight rover, known simply as ?Prop-M?. A Prop-M rover was attached to the landing capsule by a fifteen-meter umbilical, carrying power and telemetry. The method of locomotion was simple and ingenious; cross-country skiing. Each rover sat on a pair of metal skids, or skis, that would shuffle back and forth to inch the rover forward across Mars. Whoever designed this was clearly familiar with getting around in long snow-covered winters ? and given that no-one knew what the surface consistency was on Mars this method of travel made a great deal of sense. It was also mechanically straightforward, barely more than a child?s wind-up toy, with little to go wrong.

Except, sadly, surviving the rigors of actually trying to land on another planet. The Mars 2 lander failed due to an over-steep entry angle and became the first piece of human produced wreckage on Mars. Mars 3 fared somewhat better, achieving a historic soft landing ? but transmitting for barely 15 seconds before failing. Had the landings gone better the Prop-M rovers would have been placed on the regolith by a mechanical arm before skiing off. Each had rudimentary obstacle detection mechanisms ? simple metal rods that if pushed would cause the rover to turn, and each carried instruments to test for regolith density and penetration depth at regular intervals. The lander capsule itself carried a scanning electronic camera (not unlike that on the later Viking landers) and atmospheric measuring devices (including a mass spectrometer). It also had the ability to examine surface samples for chemistry and constitution ? and particularly to test for the presence of organic (carbon) compounds.

Not Mars, just noise (probably) - the first and only image transmitted by the Mars 3 lander in 1971

Unfortunately the only image transmitted by Mars 3 appears to have consisted of noise. Had the mission lasted for a few minutes more Prop-M could have become the first tourist to be photographed on the surface of Mars. The Soviet scientists also knew that by observing the tracks left by the Prop-M rovers they would learn about the composition of the martian regolith, a trick that was eventually used decades later.

Despite the failures in landing, the Mars 2 and 3 orbiters sent back a wealth of information on the martian environment and topography, a remarkable achievement coming barely 2 years after humans set foot on the Moon.

So on August 6th 2012, as we wait nervously to hear whether Curiosity has made it safely to the interior of Gale Crater, spare a thought for those pioneering rovers that almost managed to ski on Mars more than forty years ago.

Getting Started With Your Online Business Part 4 - Build Website ...

By now you should have everything you need to build your website. You signed up for an account at WebStarts.com and that took care of the domain, hosting, and design tools. You?re now looking at a blank canvas or perhaps you chose from one of the hundreds of pre-designed sites from WebStarts. Either way you?ll need to begin to customize your pages in a way that make sense for your product or service.

A good place to start with your general web design is to ask yourself ? What?s the goal of my website? Is the goal to gain new customers? Is it to convery information? Is it to sell products? Is the goals to generate a phone call or capture an email address? Is it to compliment some other form of marketing I?m already doing? Whatever the goal is of your website needs to be the focus of your design.

Whatever your goal is there are several guidelines you can follow that will give you the best chance to reach them. One of the first things you need to know is that the average person will only wait about 7 seconds for a page to load before moving on. This means you need to design a page that will load fast. Here are some of the things that will help you keep your webpages loading quickly.

1. Optimize your images for the web.

When you run out and snap a photo with your 8 megapixel camera it?s going to produce a large image. Most likely the image is going to be at least 2mb. If you upload that raw image to your website it?s going to cause your page to load extremely slow. 2mb is a lot of data. Just think of when you?re downloading other things like a song from the internet. Depending on your connecting a 2mb file can take several seconds to a few minutes.

The first step to optimizing your images is to make them smaller. When you snapped that photo on an 8 megapixel camera it produced an image size that is entirely too big for your web page. I recommend keep your images 800?600 at most. That ensures they?ll be viewable on most screen sizes while keeping the page loading times quick. If you convert the image to an optimized JPEG or PNG you?ll be able to make it load even faster. Following these steps will lead to your page loading at least 50 times faster.

2. Don?t put too many images on one page.

Everytime someone loads a web page your browser is requesting files from a server. The more files it has to request, the longer it takes for the page to load. So even if you have many small files you?re still generating a lot of small requests. In most instances it?s better to generate one large request as opposed to many small ones. So if you?re designing a graphic for your webpage try to reduce the number of images (requests) by combining those images. Overall try to limit the number of images you include on a page. Remember your site visitors are only willing to wait about 7 seconds for your page to load.

3. Don?t use Flash.

There are a lot of great things about Flash. Flash can allow you to create some really dynamic web pages filled with catchy animations. But none of that matters if the page never loads. Flash files typically take a while to load. In additon they rely on the Flash Player being installed on the website visitors computers. If you want to get the most out of your website you should avoid using Flash altogether. Later on I?ll share with you several reasons why.

4. Don?t over do it with scripts and code.

Many times slow loading pages can be causes by adding third party scripts and code to a page. These third party scripts rely on contacting other servers before they allow the page to load. So let?s say for example you have a tracking script that let?s you know who visited your website and where they came from. If that script attempts to contact an external sever and that sever is running slowly our not available it will cause your page to load slowly or in some cases not at all. Overall try not to include too many of these code snippets or scripts.

5. Use a lot of text.

It may not look as stunning as photos or be as catchy but text is the still the best way to communicate infromation on a webpage. Using a lot of text to convey your message will ensure your site is not only running fast but also getting the best possible search engine position. Search engine robots/spiders read text on your website to know what your website is all about. These robots/spiders cannot read images. Even if you have words in your image they will not be picked up by search engines. And if the search engines cannot determine what your site is about you?ll receive low ranking and it will be hard people to find you online.

If you do everything right your pages will load quickly and you?ll have the eyeballs of your audience, but for only 3 or 4 seconds. In the next post I will reveal what you need to do to capture the attention of your site visitors and keep them on your page.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Hushpuppy (Quvenzhan? Wallis) shares a private moment with her father (Dwight Henry).

No other 2012 film can boast the raw originality of ?Beasts of the Southern Wild,? Benh Zeitlin?s marvelously textured and beautifully realized bayou fantasy, which sees the world through the kaleidoscopic lens of a child at a crossroads. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhan? Wallis) is a 6-year-old girl raised like a boy by her ailing father (Dwight Henry), whose illness coincides with a Katrina-like storm and a calamitous ecological allegory, which thunders forth in the form of prehistoric monsters. Along with documentary-style details that offer access to a shrouded microcosm, Zeitlin weaves these pieces together with near-masterful cohesion, emerging with something that feels gloriously homespun from end to end.

Written by Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar, whose play ?Juicy and Delicious? served as the inspiration, ?Beasts? is driven by earthly philosophies and metaphors, particularly in regard to who the beasts are and how they fit into the grand scheme. Hushpuppy and her co-inhabitants of The Bathtub, the southern-Delta dreamland she calls home, are shown to possess the same animalism as the net-captured critters they consume, yet even more savage are those invading creatures and the ?civilized? aid workers who venture past the levees, draining The Bathtub of its residents.

Remarkably polished in all its un-polished-ness, this movie assumes a lofty perch on virtually every filmic level. It presents a realm that feels otherwise uncharted, it hinges on a poignant bond portrayed by spot-on actors, it achieves aural and visual styles that seem magically unique (even splatters of grease look like glistening fairy dust), and it manages to truly be about something ? a worldly thematic distinction that gives it long-term legs to stand on.

Through it all, ?Beasts? is enchantingly intimate, blessed with Hushpuppy?s guileless and half-articulate narration, and hoisted by the undercurrent of family as a necessary support. Just like the makeshift raft of debris and car parts that carries her through the flood, Hushpuppy?s upbringing is ramshackle at best, made of tough love and damaged goods. In a quest that also sends her searching for her mother, the wee heroine confides that her favorite feeling is to be lifted. It?s a feeling ?Beasts? generously provides.

NEW YORK (July 19, 2012) A dramatic photo of a male leopard dragging a massive gaur (or Indian bison) calf in Karnataka's Bandipur Tiger Reserve turned out to be the same animal photographed by a WCS camera trap nearly eight years ago.

The photo, taken by Indian photographer Vinay S. Kumar, was initially submitted to Conservation India, a not-for-profit portal to enable conservation action. Intrigued by the picture, CI's editors sent it to researchers at Wildlife Conservation Society's India Program who have been running a tiger-monitoring program for over two decades the longest in the world. Their huge database of camera trap pictures also includes hundreds of pictures of leopards.

The male was quickly identified, thanks to special computer software that can compare rosette patterns, as Bandipur Leopard #123 or BPL-123, which was first camera-trapped on December 2, 2004, according to Dr. N. Samba Kumar, Joint Director Conservation Science, WCS India.

The intensive, long-term camera trapping project, implemented by the Centre for Wildlife Studies, in collaboration with the Karnataka Forest Department, and with support from Wildlife Conservation Society, has yielded extremely valuable data on large carnivore densities, as well as recruitment and survival rates, all of which are crucial to gauge how big cat populations are faring. Research at Bandipur Tiger Reserve has shown that tiger densities are quite high (10-15 tigers/100 km2).

"Photographs can help track the life histories of individual tigers and as can be seen in this case, leopards," said Ullas Karanth, director of WCS's India Programs. "In this context, even photographs taken by tourists can be valuable in providing additional information. As this particular 'catch' shows, BPL 123 is thriving, and his superb condition is perhaps an indicator of the health of his habitat too."

Leopards are legendary for hauling prey much larger than themselves into trees to keep them from the clutches of other predators. The gaur in the image probably weighs about 100 kilograms (220 pounds), while a full-grown male Indian leopard on the other hand, would weigh between 50-70 kilograms (110- 154 pounds).

    ###

WCS's tiger and other big cat conservation work in India is made possible in part by the Liz Claiborne and Art Ortenberg Foundation, among other generous supporters. WCS collaborators on this project include the Karnataka Forest Department and National Tiger Conservation Authority.

The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. We do so through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony. WCS is committed to this mission because it is essential to the integrity of life on Earth. Visit www.wcs.org.

Hollywood Cartoons : American Animation in Its Golden Age

Hollywood Cartoons : American Animation in Its Golden Age

The fruit of exhaustive research, from interviews with more than 200 cartoon creators to the unearthing of piles of personal papers, dusty artwork and even hectographed memos from the 1930s, this long-awaited survey of American animation has taken Barrier (during the 1960s, the editor and publisher of Funnyworld, a periodical devoted to animation) more than 25 years to write. Barrier has screened thousands of films, including hundreds of silent pictures and almost all the short sound cartoons produced for theatrical release by the Disney, Harmon-Ising, Schlesinger, Warner Bros., MGM, UPA, and Iwerks studios, and his command of the material is astounding. He covers everything from creative character development to artistic influences, budget limitations, box office returns and technological advances such as the introduction of Xerox copiers to transfer pencil drawings directly as black lines, eliminating the inking stage. In addition to profiles of major talents, Barrier presents glimpses of Disney?s earliest sketches, the insights of film critics, studio accountants and even psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, as well as countless anecdotes, such as one artist?s memory of Disney?s new 1939 air-conditioned Burbank studio, where any animator could pick up his phone and call the coffee shop and have a soda delivered, or hot coffee, hot chocolate, ice creamAanything. And a waiter would come running down the hall, with service right to your room. This cartoon cornucopia is both a delightful entertainment and a serious study, easily ranking as the definitive overview of the animation industry?s accomplishments. In addition to the archival art and rare photos is a nice bonus of several flip-book sequences written into the page corners.

Testing For Alzheimer's Disease Risk Without Treatment ... - Kiefit.com

Diagnostic tests are increasingly capable of identifying plaques and tangles present in Alzheimer's disease, yet the disease remains untreatable. Questions remain about how these tests can be used in research studies examining potential interventions to treat and prevent Alzheimer's disease. Experts from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania participated in a panel at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2012 (AAIC 2012) discussing ways to ethically disclose and provide information about test results to asymptomatic older adults...

I know that for some people sex can be just that, sex. No emotional attachment to the other person is needed for them to have a good time. And for others there has to be an emotional connection in order for the sex to be good. Speaking for myself, I know that sex without emotion did absolutely nothing for me - yea I got worked up initially, but the true excitement wasn't there, and the finish, well there was none for me, and I would walk away from those experiences thinking what a waste of time. Only when I had an emotionally attachment to someone was I able to let go of my inhibitions and get lost in the moment. And the deeper the emotional connection, the stronger the sexual responses.

Am I an oddity? How many other people out there are like that?

For reference, my H had ALOT of sexual relationships before me, but he now claims that they were all of the physical nature and he never really understood there could be a deep emotionally aspect to it as well. BUT of course, he didn't walk away from these purely physical encounters as dissatisfied as I did with mine. In other words he was able to have sex for sex sake and enjoy it.

I feel the same as you SeaMaiden .... so does my husband.

In trying to explain the WHY's behind feeling this as strongly as I do.... pieces of that can be found in this thread >>

What I will Teach my Daughter about SEX...in relation to LOVE, her emotions, her life

Some of my thoughts here :

    Quote:

    2. I will teach my daughter .....Sex is beautiful thing ...but it has it's place, there is a time & a season for such beauty... it is meant to be shared between 2 people who LOVE each other. There is no greater pleasure God has given us on this earth, no emotional BONDING that has more meaning -as the giving & receiving in this way, that this act has the awesome potential to Create NEW LIFE..... that it should never be used casually, or carelessly, because of this very fact, It carries the greatest of responsibilities with it. It is the awesomest of the AWESOME. I will refer to it as "sacred" even.

    3. I will teach my daughter not everyone looks at Sex as this Special. What she sees in the media, magazines, tv, music, hears in school, even sees friends experience - too often results in broken relationships where sex was ingaged in TOO QUICKLY, the "bad boys" being praised for their conquests, Girls giving themselves to these gamers in hopes "for love", women dressing to entice the hot guys -and for what ? Hearts ripped in 2, tears, loss of self esteem sometimes, pregnancy faced alone, Grandparents raising grandchildren, children growing up without fathers, a night of physical passion without connection? Rubbers can be worn but the brokenness that follows SCARS our entire societ

6.......Some women can enjoy Sex without an emotional connection... I personally can not understand this at all, I am greedy!! I would want BOTH, LUST is passionate & all Consuming -YES ! ....but I would want MORE from that man, I would tie myself to him, want to posses him , It would utterly DEVESTATE me if he did not feel the same as I, was cold the next day or ....gone.

I will talk openly to my daughter about this side of sex also, and ask how she would feel about such things. Explaining MANY men can separate this, one night stands are common. But I will always believe, overwhelmingly more women get HURT by these, loosing a part of themselves along the way.

    8. I will teach my daughter there is a heavy EMOTIONAL side to sex.... Sex releases certain chemicals in our brains that change the way we think ...the hormones released work to bond us to our partner, it's like gluing two pieces of paper together. If you tried to tear those pages apart, the break wouldn't be a clean one. The same kind of thing happens when there's a breakup in a sexual relationship. These break ups can be as painful as mini-divorces. If this happens over & over & over, it has a way of de-personalizing our emotions.

My guy friends have often teased me about my view that I wanted/needed to be emotionally involved BEFORE becoming sexually involved.

I've had one or two casual encounters, but always felt so badly after that I was dissuaded from continuing.

Ironically, I now find myself with a woman who seems just the opposite. She claims to prefer sex with somebody she cares about, but that certainly did not prevent her from all manner of sexual liaisons.

She had always held herself out as fairly old fashioned, but that was a ruse that she contrived because she knew that I was fairly old fashioned.

I ultimately discovered that she many, many partners. She was prone to sex with coworkers, friends, casual acquaintances, boyfriends of friends, etc.

Through pure (bad) luck, I happened to sit down at our shared computer and discover a brand new email to her from a guy on the west coast asking her if she was interested in a no-strings-attached sexual arrangement. She had not lived in California for years at that time, and insisted that she had only ever met him once at a dating event. I found it odd that a guy would reach out to a woman, suggesting an NSA arrangement, entirely out of the blue.

But at that point, I really couldn't bear to know any more about her cavalier approach to sex, so I didn't press her on the matter.

TheOnceler - my husband was like that when I met him, although he portrayed himself to be different. I don't know if it was MY attitude towards sex that made him stand back a bit or not. But later when we talked about it he said that he was very anxious to have sex right away because for him it was more of a "tester" to see if we were compatible. Because I refused to hop straight into bed with him it forced him to discover who I was as a person first, and he said that was actually the first time he "waited" for a woman. He said the first time we did make love he felt he was already falling in love with me and he had never felt that before with any one else (and he was 48 years old at the time).

Of course he kept alot of stuff from me about his past (see my other post) and when he did come clean and tell me everything, it was a shock, it hurt, but at the same time, oddly, it wasn't surprising because of his attitude regarding sex when I first met him.

Now I did have a relationship with a man a few years before I met my husband and that guy was also another one who claimed he never really associated sex and emotions together before me (maybe I have some kind of magical fairy dust, who knows LOL), but we went our separate ways and I heard that he is now in an open relationship with his current girlfriend. Go figure.
