A cricket game to end all war? Afghanistan takes on Pakistan.

Maybe not, but as Afghanistan played its first major international cricket match today against rival Pakistan, some hoped the goodwill between the players on the field would translate into better relations off it.?

For the first time ? ever ? Afghanistan today played an international cricket match against an elite team. It was against top-ranked neighbor Pakistan, with whom it has a relationship that is sometimes fraught with uneasiness, sometimes full of professions of brotherhood.?

But the historic cricket match, which took place in the UAE, both illustrated the love/hate relationship and helped fans on both sides of the border to forget, at least for a while, the tensions that exist between their countries.

?Everyone here is watching the match on TV. It?s very exciting and we?re praying hard for Afghanistan,? Pardis Haidary, a military officer in Kabul told the Monitor over the phone. ?Matches like this help build friendship,? he says.

For newcomers Afghanistan, it was their first chance to pick up the bat against a major international team, having previously only played against other low-ranked teams.

Cricket was brought to war-torn Afghanistan through refugees who picked up the game during their time in Pakistani camps, and is popular mainly in the Pashtun-majority areas in the south and east of the country.

Though Afghanistan is new to the game, its rise has been nothing short of a ?wonderful story,? according to the International Cricket Council, which provides the Afghanistan Cricket Board with $700,000 a year to develop the sport.

Relations between the two countries have remained tense since the assassination of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani in September last year. Mr. Rabbani, who was head of a government-appointed peace council, was killed in his home by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban peace envoy, in an attack that some Afghan officials have blamed on Pakistan?s main intelligence agency.

Both sides, meanwhile, accuse each other of allowing militant havens inside their respective borders to carry out raids in each other?s countries. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari is set to host his Afghan and Iranian counterparts for a trilateral summit in Islamabad next week.

At the popular Kabul Restaurant in Islamabad, staff and customers remained glued to their television, rooting for Afghanistan to pull off an unlikely upset.? Though the Afghans eventually lost, Pakistan?s cricket captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, lauded them for the talent they displayed and their fighting spirit, which at times stretched former world-champions Pakistan.?

Some hoped the goodwill between the players on the field could translate into better relations off it. ?I have been in Pakistan for 19 years, but I can?t get a Pakistani passport,? complains waiter Naqeebullah Kabir.? ?Now we can?t get visas to visit home, either.?

The only thing that could possibly be better than watching Downton Abbey?s Maggie Smith, as the Dowager Countess, stop the rest of the cast dead in their tracks with withering glances and haughty comments would be watching her spar with another matriarch of her own caliber. And that?s why it was time for Julian Fellowes?s addictive smash hit upstairs-downstairs drama to cast the visiting mother of Downton?s American-born Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern) with? Shirley MacLaine. MacLaine will join the cast for season three, which begins shooting next month. Obviously, no story lines have been leaked yet but it?s safe to say that, even in a grand home of more than a hundred rooms, the place isn?t going to be big enough for the both of them. And OK, maybe it won?t reach the hair-pulling heights of Joan Collins and Linda Evans duking it out in a fountain on Dynasty, but this is going to be good. So good.

Ryan Murphy?s New Normal: song-less and horror-free

It?s official: Ryan Murphy is taking over all of television as we know it. He?s already got Glee and American Horror Story on the air, and now NBC has ordered a pilot for The New Normal, a half-hour comedy project Murphy co-created with Allison Adler. It?s set to star The Book of Mormon?s Andrew Rannells and its plot concerns a blended family of a gay couple and the woman who becomes a surrogate to help the men make a baby. Its prospects are good, too: there was already a bidding war over the project. So if it goes to series, it?ll be for the TV and cultural critics to sort out what the impact will be of the kind of gay parenting show we?ll all ultimately get from Murphy. He is, after all, a man whose screenwriting approach to gay men leans heavily toward the old-school ?fabulous? end of the spectrum, but at least those guys on Modern Family and Lea Michele?s invisible gay dads won?t be alone now.

Every Monday, the CSPH takes a look at a book or film focusing on an aspect of sexuality. This week we are featuring Esther Perel?s 2007 book Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence.

Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence is the paperback version of Perel?s best-selling and award-winning book, Mating in Captivity: Reconciling the Erotic and the Domestic, which has been translated into 24 different languages and examines issues of intimacy and sex in married and/or long-term couples. Perel is a practicing AASECT certified sex therapist in New York City and a well-known voice on couples and sexuality across cultures. She has been a guest on numerous television shows as well as featured in The Washington Post, The New Yorker, and Vogue, among others.

The book opens with a poem by D.H. Lawrence entitled ?Wild Things in Captivity,? which states, ?Sex is a state of grace ? In a cage it can?t take place ? Break the cage then, start in and try.? In each chapter, Perel eloquently challenges a reader to reconsider traditional definitions, expectations, and norms of committed relationships and marriage. One major problem she addresses is the absence or dwindling amount of sex between couples who still love each other but have become too busy, too tired, or too involved in other things to have sex. Offering insight into why intimacy and desire are difficult to maintain over time and ways that partners can rediscover their sexual relationships, Perel supports her theories and advice with personal case studies from her experiences as a therapist.

Throughout the book, Perel emphasizes the importance of keeping one?s own individuality within a long-term, committed relationship. She states, ?[I]n the course of establishing security, many couples confuse love with merging. To sustain an ?lan (vigor and liveliness) toward the other, there must be a synapse to cross.? Perel mentions a couple, John and Beatrice, who meet, fall in love, begin a passionate and satisfying sex life, move in together, learn everything about each other, commit to each other, and then essentially stop having sex. Using John and Beatrice?s story as an example of how increased emotional intimacy is often accompanied by decreased sexual desire, Perel claims that the sexual health of a couple stands on its own as a parallel narrative to the couple?s relationship. Sexual pleasure requires a sense of freedom and autonomy that is difficult to reconcile with what is required to maintain emotional intimacy.

Perel challenges couples to embrace their desires and fantasies, even if it feels uncomfortable. In a chapter entitled ?Democracy Versus Hot Sex,? she discusses American society?s general unease with kink and bondage, especially in the context of marriage and families with kids. In addition to mentioning how gradual changes in sexual preference or practices are often seen as a result of a pathology or problem within the relationship, she challenges couples to embrace sexual urges that, while always consensual, may not be planned or part of a normal routine.

An important distinction between Perel?s approach to rekindling the sex lives of long-term couples and the mountain of self-help books that claim to have ?the secret to great sex,? is that Perel does not offer set advice or simple steps to follow. Instead of consulting a manual to spice up one?s sex life, Perel believes that people should act on their own impulses, whether that is leaving a dirty note for one?s partner to find when they get home or planning an evening alone free of technology. The overriding messages that Mating in Captivity delivers is that good sex does not have to end or dwindle because of time or experience and that lust does not have to devolve into companionship.

Grammys open with prayer for Whitney Houston

LOS ANGELES?? The Grammys got under way on Sunday, with the Recording Academy trying to focus on music's biggest night after of the death of one of music's biggest names ? Whitney Houston.

Houston died on the eve of the Grammys at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where she was preparing to attend a pre-Grammy party. Her death cast a huge shadow over the event.

"We've had a death in our family," said host LL Cool J shortly after Bruce Springsteen opened the show by singing, with obvious poignancy, his new single, "We Take of Our Own."

The actor-rapper then said a prayer for Houston as stars like Lady Gaga and Miranda Lambert bowed their heads in silence.

LL Cool J then said: "Whitney, we will always love you."

Adele won the first award of the evening, for Best Pop Solo Performance, for "Someone Like You."

Presenter Jimmy Jam, a friend and producer of Houston's, said it's "a bittersweet occasion tonight with the passing of Whitney."

"Anytime someone passes away, the thing you do is you gather your family together, tell stories," he said. "A little bit of mourning, little bit of celebrating ? this is our family tonight and we're going to do it the best that we can do it."

Many awards were handed out earlier, before the televised portion of the event. Melanie Fiona, who won best traditional R&B vocal performance and best R&B song with Cee-Lo for the song "Fool for You," also gave tribute to the fallen star: "Whitney Houston I would not be standing up here if it were not for you, thank you so much."

A moving moment came when Tony Bennett won his second Grammy of the evening, best pop performance by a duo/group, for his collaboration with Amy Winehouse, "Body and Soul." Winehouse, another supremely talented singer who had a long struggle with drugs and alcohol, died last year.

Bennett, who also won for the album "Duets II," brought both her parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, onstage to accept the award.

"We shouldn't be here, our darling daughter should be here. These are the cards that we're dealt," Mitch Winehouse said. "We miss our daughter so much."

Winehouse also referenced the deaths of Houston and Etta James, saying: "There's a beautiful girl band up there in heaven."

When it came to the business of awarding trophies, the Foo Fighters were the top winners in the pre-telecast ceremony, taking four out of their possible six trophies, including best rock album for "Wasting Light" (the album is also up for album of the year).

"This is a very great honor because this album was the most fun we've ever had making a record," said frontman Dave Grohl. "I asked my wife if it was OK to use my garage...? This represents the human element of music."

Kanye West and dance/electronica DJ Skrillex won three each. Adele captured two of her six possible Grammys, including best pop vocal album for "21," while Taylor Swift also won two trophies for her rebuke to her critics, "Mean." The folk-country duo The Civil Wars also won two.

Before the death of one of pop music's most important figures, the pre-Grammy buzz focused on whether Adele ? 2011's top-selling artist and set to make her first public performance on the show since having vocal cord surgery ? would be the queen of the Grammys. Although Kanye West led all nominees with seven and Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters tied Adele with six nominations, she was favored to sweep all of her categories.

But as show time neared, the focus remained on Houston's death. A tribute to Houston featuring Jennifer Hudson was to take place during the main ceremony.

Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich said Houston's death was "too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years."

More Houston tributes from nominees and presenters are expected during the three-and-a-half hour Staples Center show, which was to feature the Foo Fighters, Mars, Nicki Minaj, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Swift, Chris Brown and Rihanna.

On the red carpet, R&B singer Ledisi burst into an impromptu rendition of Houston's "How Will I Know." Bonnie Raitt said, "I'm glad we're all together to grieve together."

The show will mark the first time Rihanna and Brown have appeared at the same awards show since his attack on her three years ago ? also on the eve of the Grammys ? forced both to drop out of the show and led to an assault conviction for Brown. It almost derailed his career, but 2011 marked a huge comeback, and he was rewarded with a Grammy performance slot on Sunday night's CBS broadcast.

Rihanna is also a nominee, up for album of the year. She is competing with Adele's "21," Mars' "Doo-Woops & Hooligans," the Foo Fighters' "Wasting Light" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" is nominated for record and song of the year. Both categories also include Bon Iver's "Holocene," Mumford & Sons "The Cave," and Mars' "Grenade." Katy Perry's "Firework" is up for record of the year but instead of that song, West's "All of the Lights" takes the remaining position in the song of the year category.

The ceremony also marks the first since a major overhaul of the categories last year: They were trimmed from 109 to 78. The move upset some musicians, and a protest was planned outside of the Staples Center on Sunday.

Why is NASA sending a penny to Mars?

A US penny is on-board NASA's Curiosity rover that is scheduled to land on Mars in August. The 1909 penny commemorating the centennial of President Lincoln's birth will act as a calibration target to help scientists and the public to gauge the size of objects on Mars.

A penny in today's economy does not go very far, but that has not stopped NASA from making a 1-cent piece stretch all the way to another planet: Mars.

The copper coin is attached to a smartphone-size plaque at the end of the robotic arm on Curiosity, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory car-size rover. The plaque, which was added to the vehicle as a calibration target, looks like an eye chart supplemented with color chips and the attached penny.

NASA launched the Curiosity rover last November and it is scheduled to touch down on Mars in August.

Targeted for a landing inside the Red Planet's Gale Crater, Curiosity will then begin its two-year mission to determine whether the area's environment has ever been favorable to support microbial life.

Researchers will use Curiosity's calibration plaque to test one of the six-wheeled rover's five science cameras, the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI).

The "hand lens" in MAHLI's name refers to Earth-bound field geologists' practice of carrying a hand lens for close inspection of rocks they find. When shooting photos in the field, geologists use various calibration methods.

"When a geologist takes pictures of rock outcrops she is studying, she wants an object of [a] known scale in the photographs," said principal investigator Ken Edgett with Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, Calif. "If it is a whole cliff face, she'll ask a person to stand in the shot. If it is a view from a meter or so away, she might use a rock hammer." [Photos: NASA's New Mars Rover Curiosity]

"If it is a close-up, as the MAHLI can take, she might pull something small out of her pocket. Like a penny," Edgett said.

Curiosity's 1-cent piece is not just any old penny.

Edgett picked out and purchased the penny with his own funds. A 1909 "VDB" cent, the coin is from the first year Lincoln pennies were minted, the centennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. The initials ("VDB") of the coin's designer ? Victor David Brenner ? are etched onto the coin's reverse.
